talked at the beginning about presidential leadership and you worked in the obama white house for a year or so. the president has too deal with the debt ceiling. he wants to pass major immigration reform. >> absolutely. >> chris: do something about climate change. has he told you how much political capital he is willing to spend on what is going to be a very tough fight? >> i think that the president has demonstrated tremendous leadership on this issue. i think the country rallied around him and h his leadership because he really was a voice for the parents who lost a child. >> chris: has he told you how much -- >> and i see from his actions and we hear from the white house and we hear from the vice president that they are going to lay down political capital on the issue and i think the one thing i would say to those people like larry and others who said we can't do anything about these issues is that whether it comes from the background checks or dealing with high capacity magazines which was the issue in newtown we can take action and to say that we should do nothing really doesn't res

of the performers and we were talking about beyonce earlier last week. major obama supporter. then we have kelly clarkson. she is a ron paul supporter. >> she is. when the president calls and says please come sing i think you definitely want to perform. you have james taylor and the kids concert, alisha keys, john legend, usher, smoky robinson, the cast of "glee." >> plans on the ground, talk about that. i remember four years ago you couldn't move. you had to get out of your bed at 3:00 a.m. to get down to the mall in time because even the subways were so full. what do they expect this time around? >> last time it was 1.8 million people. this time around they are expecting around 600,000 to 800,000 people. it will be smaller but no less grand. i think obviously d.c. is really preparing for all of those things and you have to prepare early. hopefully there won't be problems trying to get into the gates like there was last time for the swearing in ceremony and then we had the ticket master drama. >> the tickets are supposed to be free but now people are able to buy them as much as 2 grand on ebay

obama promises that no one's talking about taking away your hunting rifle or your self-defense handgun, it matters that gun control activists may, in fact, be talking about taking away your hunting rifle or your self-defense handgun, whether they know it or not. so let's forgo the arbitrary, ambiguous, fearmongering terms and get real specific about what we actually mean by gun control. it may be politically effective to rail against rapid fire, high capacity, assault weapons. doesn't actually mean anything. so if we're serious, we should at least start by getting the terms right. okay. that does it for "the cycle." martin, it's all yours. >> just a quick question. how many rounds did jared loughner fire off before he was tackled? >> what's your point? >> how many rounds had he fired off? >> i'm not sure. i don't remember. >> 31. >> okay. >> he was actually tackled because he was reloading. >> we should be trying to stop crazy people and criminals, martin, from shooting one person, not ten-plus one person which all is accomplished when you ban high capacity magazines. that's all that's

and hearing about how president obama is -- the people are talking about impeachment over the fact that he might use some executive order privilege to get gun control? >> well, actually i was elected in 1992 to the house and actually did vote on the assault weapons ban in 1994, went through reelection and it was a tough time, but the fact is i think people realize today that we've got to do something. i agree, listening to those parents talk about the loss of their children, it's excruciating. we've got to do something. i think the president realizes that and he'll take some action that he can. i don't think he will overstep his bounds, he will look at the opportunities he has and will work to reach out to congress to see what requires legislation, but what's got to be comprehensive, no doubt about that. i represented a huge district in my house district, three counties didn't even have any services from the mentally ill. so there's a lot that can be done and we've got to work comprehensively, but going back to the last question, i just have to say friendships tame time. they do take work.

is proposing would have stopped the massacre at sandy hook. president obama is targeting the rights of law-abiding citizens instead of what caused the violence. that is a very strong response from someone who's talked about as a 2016 potential candidate. >> and he also accused the president of abusing his executive power in the 23 actions. when you read the 23 actions, frankly, these are very weak directives. there's not much more the white house could do. they've got a whole bunch of things out there, but to call it an overreach is a big, big stretch there. but you're right, andrea, that's presidential politics. the most important responses, though, on this front have come from the two people in charge of putting legislation on the floor of the house and the senate. and speaker boehner's spokesperson said we'll be happy to look at any proposals that pass the senate. well, what did harry reid say last weekend about voting on any bills having to do with gun legislation? they are not going to vote on anything unless they know it can pass the house. here we are, stalemate. >> exactly. >> back
